Comprehensive eye exams in Montclair, CA
A comprehensive eye exam checks both how well you see and how healthy your eyes are. At Affordable Family Vision Center, Dr. Rosali Quintanar and our team provide eye exams for adults and families at our office on Holt Blvd in Montclair, with care in English and Spanish.
What happens during an eye exam
Every visit is fitted to the patient, but a comprehensive exam generally covers:
- Your health history, your family's eye health, and any changes you've noticed
- How clearly you see at distance and up close
- Your prescription for glasses, if you need one
- How your eyes focus, move, and work together
- The health of the eye itself, inside and out
Some exams include dilating drops so the doctor can see the back of the eye more clearly. Your vision may be blurry and light-sensitive for a few hours afterward, so bring sunglasses for the ride home.
How often should you have an eye exam?
The American Optometric Association recommends an exam at least every two years for adults 18 to 64, and every year from age 65. People with a higher risk of eye problems, such as those with diabetes, high blood pressure, or a family history of eye disease, may need exams more often. Your optometrist will tell you when to come back.
Book sooner if your vision changes, your glasses no longer feel right, or you're having frequent headaches or eye strain.
Eye exam or vision screening?
A vision screening at school, work, or the DMV is a quick check of how well you read a chart. A comprehensive eye exam goes further: it measures your prescription and examines the health of your eyes. The AOA notes that screenings can miss many vision problems, so a passed screening doesn't replace an exam.

Do you accept new patients?
Yes. Choose “New patient” when you request a visit online, or call the office.
Can I use my vision insurance or Medi-Cal?
We accept Medi-Cal, Medicare, and a number of vision and medical plans (listed below). Insurance participation can change, so please call the office to confirm your coverage before your visit.
Do you see patients in Spanish?
Yes. We provide care in English and Spanish. Choose your language when you book.
What should I bring?
A photo ID, your insurance card, your current glasses and contact lenses, your current prescription if you have it, a list of any medications, and sunglasses in case your eyes are dilated. The full checklist is on our contact page.
