A contact lens exam measures your eyes for lenses that fit well, feel comfortable, and correct your vision. Affordable Family Vision Center provides contact lens fittings and follow-up care for first-time and returning wearers at our Montclair office.
Why contacts need their own exam
A glasses prescription can't be used to order contact lenses. Contacts sit directly on the eye, so the prescription also includes the lens brand, size, and curve that fit your eye. That's why a contact lens exam includes measurements and a lens fitting on top of the standard eye exam.
What a contact lens fitting involves
- A conversation about your eyes, your day, and how you plan to wear lenses
- Measurements of the front surface of your eye
- Trying lenses on so the doctor can check fit, comfort, and vision
- Instructions for putting in, removing, and caring for your lenses, for new wearers
- A follow-up visit if needed to confirm the lenses are working well
Once your fitting is complete, federal law requires your eye doctor to give you a copy of your contact lens prescription.
Contact lens safety
Sleeping in contacts reduces the oxygen reaching your cornea and raises the risk of infection, even with lenses sold for extended wear. If you have redness, pain, discharge, or blurry vision while wearing contacts, take them out and call us right away.
Common questions
I’ve never worn contacts. Can I start?
Yes. We do first-time fittings and will teach you how to put in, remove, and care for your lenses.
My lenses are uncomfortable. What should I do?
Book a visit. Lenses that don’t feel right may need a different fit or material. If you have pain, redness, or discharge, remove them and call the office.
