Children’s eye exams in Montclair
Children's eye exams check that a child sees clearly and that their eyes are developing and working together well. Affordable Family Vision Center sees children of any age, including first-time patients, at our family optometry office in Montclair.
When should children have eye exams?
The American Optometric Association recommends:
- A first eye exam between 6 and 12 months of age
- At least one exam between ages 3 and 5
- An exam before first grade, then every year through age 17
A good time to book is before the school year starts, or whenever a teacher or pediatrician suggests a vision check.
School screenings don’t replace an eye exam
A school vision screening is a quick distance-vision check. It can miss problems with focusing up close, eye teaming, and eye health, which affect reading and schoolwork. A comprehensive exam with an optometrist looks at all of these.
Signs your child may need an exam sooner
Children rarely say they can't see well, because they assume everyone sees the way they do. Call us if you notice your child:
- Squinting, tilting their head, or covering one eye
- Sitting very close to screens or holding books close
- Rubbing their eyes often or complaining of headaches
- Losing their place while reading, or avoiding reading and close work
- An eye that turns in, out, up, or down

Does Medi-Cal cover children’s eye exams?
We accept Medi-Cal and several vision plans. Coverage depends on the plan, so bring your child’s insurance card and our staff will verify benefits.
How young can my child have an eye exam?
We see children of any age, including first-time patients. The AOA recommends a first eye exam between 6 and 12 months of age.
